Animated Phonics Lessons & Activities (Third Grade)
Syllabification – This free phonics lesson will teach your third-graders how to identify the number of syllables in a word. Words like dinosaur, lizard, and cave are reviewed. You might see your student with the top of their hand against their chin while reading aloud, but don’t worry, they are just practicing their syllables!
Substitution – Children help Carlos create new words for his message in a bottle using substitution in this free phonemic awareness lesson. First, students say a word, then Carlos describes which sounds to replace, and last students choose the new word the sounds make. Words like fly and fry, damp and ramp, cute and cube are reviewed. Substitution of beginning, middle and ending sounds are included.
Prefixes – This free third-grade phonics lesson teaches students the meanings of common prefixes such as re-, un-, dis-, and sub-. Students combine prefixes with root words to make words with specific meanings. Since prefixes give meaning to thousands of words.
